In its its 2021 May decision, the Government supported our collection enlargement program. The unprecedented level of support provides an opportunity to save the outstanding values of Hungarian industrial and transport heritage. Rescuing the internationally well-known products of the domestic bus and railway vehicle industry, just as Ganz and Ikarus, has become urgent, as many vehicles are being scrapped these days. Visitors will be able to see these vehicles at the new Transportation Museum.
The new Transport Museum is getting closer and closer to completion, the design and permitting of the main building is on schedule, with construction set to begin in 2023 as originally planned.
The newest exhibition place of the Hungarian Museum of Transport will be located in the 137-year-old house of the Budapest-Kelenföld railway station. The main attraction will be a terrain table augmenting the railway exhibition.
At the exhibition, visitors can learn how Fiume has become the 10th largest port in Europe, and what it was like to walk on the cobbled quay, look in the window of a colonial shop, or just stand in the cramped interior of an emigrant cabin.

The Hungarian Government has decided to continue the design process of the new Transport Museum on the site of the former Northern Railway Depot. During the past few months the coronavirus pandemic cast doubt on the continuation of the project, thus the decision is a significant milestone for the Museum, reinforcing the commitment of the Government to the development of Budapest, to the creation of the new Transport Museum and the rehabilitation of rust-belts in the capital. The new Transport Museum will be constructed on a historic, currently unused railway site in a brownfield area. It is expected to be the most visited family attraction of Budapest, also playing a decisive role in ramping up quality tourism to the city. A significant part of the planning will take place in Hungary, so the investment will also help boost the economy after the pandemic. Our goal is to complete the plans necessary for starting the construction as soon as possible.
Diller Scofidio+Renfro, the world famous New York-based architecture firm and its Hungarian partner M-Teampannon selected on an international architectural competition to design the new Transport Museum. The work immediately started after the results, and now with the Government’s decision all design phases necessary for starting the construction will commence. The scope includes the Museum’s transport connections and the design of the permanent exhibition as well.
Thanks to the cooperation between Budapest Airport and the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport, the most exciting artifacts from the history of civil aviation will form part of the museum’s collection going forward. At the end of last year, the airport operator decided to donate rare airport equipment, instruments and works of art to the museum.
The new Museum of Tranport has received the special recognition award (“Major Development Project Special Prize”) out of 130 candidate projects at the ceremony in this year’s Hungarian Media Architecture Awards on Friday in Budapest. The Media Architecture Awards is a prestigious award in Hungarian architecture, funded by a consortium of media outlets publishing architectural content and awarded by an international jury. The Award is managed by epiteszforum.hu (“architects’ forum”), the oldest Hungarian online architecture magazine. The ceremony is accompanied by great media and public interest every year. Based on the Hungarian Museum of Transport’s master plan, Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed a museum complex that preserves the industrial heritage and renews the spectacular former Diesel hall of the Hungarian State Railways to function as a museum in the future. The new home of one of Europe's oldest museums of transport will be designed by one of the most renowned architectural studios as a brownfield redevelopment.

The results of the international design competition for the new Hungarian Museum of Transport were announced today. The event was held in the abandoned former railway maintenance depot of the Hungarian State Railways in Budapest where the museum will be relocated. Thirteen Hungarian and international architectural firms submitted entries in the second round of the two-stage competition launched last August. The proposals were assessed by an eighteen-member international jury. As part of the award ceremony Mr. István Tarlós, the Mayor of Budapest and Director General Mr. Dávid Vitézy, the chair of the jury awarded the prizes to the winners.
The winner of the competition is Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The world-famous American firm has designed numerous significant public buildings, including museums worldwide in the past decades. One of their most famous works is the New York High Line, the conversion of an abandoned industrial railway line to a highly popular public park and cultural venue. Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s design for the Hungarian Museum of Transport preserves the industrial heritage and renews the spectacular former Diesel hall of the Hungarian State Railways to function as a museum in the future.
